Heavy Power Wheelchair Transport in Tokyo – Up to 300 kg

Our wheelchair-accessible van can now carry power wheelchairs with a combined weight of up to 300 kg, including the wheelchair and the user. This service is available in Tokyo and the Kanto area, including airport transfers from Narita and Haneda.

Have you been told your power wheelchair is too heavy for a wheelchair van, or had to switch to a manual chair for your trip? Please ask us. You may be able to travel in Japan in your own chair.

How does boarding work?

You drive your power wheelchair up a long ramp into the van under its own power. The ramp is about 4.4 m long, which keeps the slope gentle.

Our staff stay beside you and guide you as you go up, but we do not push from behind. With a heavy power chair, pushing adds extra load and makes the chair harder to control, so it is safer for the chair to move by its own power.

Once you are inside, we secure the wheelchair to the vehicle before we set off.

The ramp connects directly to the floor of the van.

What we need to know before booking

To confirm that your wheelchair can be carried safely, please send us:

  • The make and model of your wheelchair

  • The combined weight of the wheelchair and the user (including batteries and anything attached to the chair)

  • The width of your wheelchair (the ramp is 70 cm wide)

  • The height from the ground to the top of the user's head when seated

  • Whether you can drive the chair yourself up a ramp

  • The number of people travelling, including the wheelchair user

  • The number and size of your suitcases and other luggage

  • If possible, a photo of your wheelchair from the side and from the back (the wheelchair only is fine)

We will check these details and let you know whether we can take your wheelchair. If it is not possible, we will suggest an alternative.

Which power wheelchairs can you carry?

We welcome inquiries about heavy-duty power wheelchairs, such as the Permobil M-series (including the M3 Corpus) and the Invacare Storm 4. Sizes and weights vary by model and configuration, so please send us your model name and we will check it for you.

Things to know

  • Pick-up and drop-off points: The ramp needs more space behind the van than a lift does. In our experience, the space in front of busy hotels and sightseeing spots is often limited, so we plan the pick-up and drop-off points with you in advance.

  • One vehicle: We currently have one van that can take wheelchairs up to 300 kg. Please contact us early. We recommend booking at least two weeks in advance, and two to three months in advance is ideal.

  • Area: This service is available in Tokyo and the Kanto area only. It is not available in the Kansai area.

  • Passengers and luggage: The ramp travels in the van with you, so there is less room for passengers and luggage than usual. For groups of four or more (including the wheelchair user), or when there is a lot of luggage, a second vehicle for luggage may be needed, which adds to the cost. We will confirm this in your quotation.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 300 kg limit include the user's weight?
Yes. The 300 kg limit is the combined weight of the wheelchair and the user, including batteries and anything attached to the chair.

Can your staff push my wheelchair up the ramp?
No. For safety, heavy power wheelchairs go up the ramp under their own power. Our staff guide you from beside the chair.

Can I use this service for an airport transfer?
Yes. We can pick you up at Narita or Haneda Airport. Because the ramp travels in the van, there is less room for luggage than usual. Please tell us how many people are travelling and how much luggage you have, and we will let you know whether a second vehicle is needed.

Is this service available in Osaka or Kyoto?
Not at this time. Transport for power wheelchairs up to 300 kg is available in Tokyo and the Kanto area only.
